Why go LED?
Admittedly I'm a little biased in writing this, but the real question is - why not go LED? They provide numerous benefits over traditional halogen bulbs, with little to no tradeoff*
*if done right (more on this at the end)
Let's start with some frivolity. As an enthusiast myself, I can state with relative confidence that you care about how your car looks. Whether in the work parking garage, at cars & coffee, or cruising to dinner in town - it's an identity you project to the world.
LEDs produce sharper, more vivid colors. Plus, they turn on and off with no "fade" effect, resulting in a visual sharpness that's usually only reserved for the newest or priciest cars on the market. Retrofitting your lights can peel the age away!
Ever leave your lights on for a brief few minutes, and come back to a car that won't start? Well, first, your battery was probably on the way out already. Second, you can drastically reduce the strain placed on your battery by installing some LEDs. This theoretically reduces load on the alternator when the engine is running as well, though that difference is imperceptible in most modern vehicles, but every little bit counts right?
For example, a typical HB3 Halogen headlamp consumes 60W of power per side, whereas our LEDs for the same application consume about half of that at just 30W per side! Similarly, a halogen W5W lamp consumes 5W, whereas an LED equivalent comes in at <1W. These savings can add up quick for an entire vehicle.
Night cruises are great, but if you're exploring the limits of your vehicle on some deserted *ahem* Mexican highway, you want to see as far as clearly as possible. This is the best part of LED headlights!
Not only do they produce more light than their outdated halogen counterparts, but the beam is more consistent across the road, and the sharper cutoff reduces glare to other road users. As if that weren't enough, the crisp white light makes road markings, signs, and parked vehicles far easier to identify.
The engineers and electricians among you should have tingling spidey senses about now - after all, I mentioned less energy going in and more light coming out. That must mean less heat! Indeed it does, as LEDs tend to exhibit 25-35% energy efficiency, relative to 2-4% of old fashioned halogens. When you have 50% or less energy going in, with 25% more of that energy being turned into useful light, the amount of harmful heat produced plummets.
The benefit of this is mostly to the hardware of your lighting system. Bulbs that run cooler are less likely to discolor, fatigue, or melt your housings and harnesses. Considering the cost of replacement housings alone, it's hard to argue against making them last longer.
Fine, you enjoy working on your car. I do too, it's borderline therapeutic. But changing bulbs isn't fun, especially when your turn signals need the bumper to be removed one fragile, uncooperative plastic clip at a time (yes I'm bitter about this experience). So I imagine we're all delighted to move to a lighting technology that lets you go years longer between those unpleasant undertakings. More time for speed parts!
After all, when's the last time you bought light bulbs that came with a warranty?
Doing it right
This is important. The automotive LED industry is a burgeoning one, with strange variants of the technology around every corner, and online stores bursting at the seams with options. There are a lot of fantastic options out there, but for each there are 5 terrible ones. Bad options can fail prematurely, damage your vehicle, or simply be worse than your standard equipment. Ever hear about someone whose light lens was melted by an LED? Yeah, bad option.
That's where we come in. We're engineers who've been playing with LED technology for years, but we're also car people. Every LED bulb you receive is selected for your specific vehicle, to produce the best results possible. If any unexpected challenges do arise, we'll knowledgeably and efficiently find a solution with you, rather than stranding you with a hollow placation. Fundamentally, we care about your car like we care about our own, and make sure to save you from the stress drinking.
